4 Best Hyundai Electric Cars for 2023

December 20, 2022 by Sean Moudry 6 Comments

Hyundai electric cars

With over 700,000 Hyundai cars sold in the U.S. each year, the Korean car company has become a well-known brand in the U.S. That said, the leadership at Hyundai isn’t sitting back on its past success. They plan on dominating the future with the electric car lineup they have available now for 2023.

It’s important to note that Hyundai’s EVs are not available in every state so review this list and then check to see what’s available in your area.

What We Love About Hyundai Electric Cars

Hyundai Electric Car Safety Features

When it comes to standard safety features, Hyundai outshines the competition. While other manufacturers make require upgrades or add-ons, Hyundai’s standard safety features include: Forward Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Driver Attention Warning, Blindspot Collision Avoidance, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance, Rear Occupant Alert, Safety Exit Warning, and Lane Keeping Assistance.

A safety-conscious electric car buyer expects their new EV to have a full list of standard safety features. This makes a Hyundai a clear forerunner for any EV buyer.

Hyundai Electric Car Warranty

Hyundai electric cars also offer the best warranty out there with a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty on the vehicle and a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty on the powertrain and battery. Hyundai also provides 3 years of complementary service and 5 years of roadside assistance. This shows that Hyundai is taking its commitment to EVs seriously.

Now, let’s dig deeper into Hyundai’s electric car lineup:

1. 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 ($41,450)

Hyundai IONIQ 5

Best: Overall

Save the best for last… Not us! We had to start with the talk of the town when it comes to electric car styling. The redesign of the IONIQ 5 in 2022 has families as divided as Beth and Jamie Dutton. (Yes, this is a Yellowstone reference!).

Whichever side you’re on, Hyundai’s redesign has attracted the attention of many EV buyers who may have otherwise purchased the same ol’ Tesla.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 styling

I, for one, like the neomodern design. With hints of pixelation in the headlights and tail lights. My wife, however, says it reminds her of a child’s toy. Maybe the IONIQ 5 is made for those of us who want our modern-day electric car to look the futuristic part.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 dashboard

The unique styling isn’t limited to the exterior. Once you enter the IONIQ 5 your eyes will be drawn to the 24-inch display that fills the entire sightline of the driver. This display shares all the important information for operation while the right side of the display manages the entertainment and navigation.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 door handles

Features like automatic flush handles, a panoramic sunroof, and real leather makes the Limited IONIQ 5 a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3. In addition to the styling features, the Limited IONIQ 5 also comes standard with a 360-degree View, ambient LED lighting, heated and cooled front seats, and optional all-wheel drive. All this for over $5,000 less than a similarly optioned Model 3.

These are the same reasons MotorTrend named the IONIQ 5 the 2023 SUV of the year. So if you’re in the market for an electric car, put the IONIQ 5 on your list of EVs to test drive.

2. 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric SE SUV ($33,550)

Hyundai Kona

Best For: The Entry-Level Electric Car Buyer

The Hyundai Kona Electric is one of our favorite electric cars under $35,000. The simple yet stylish design is up-to-date without looking like it drove out of Back to the Future II like its more expensive sibling the IONIQ 5.

One of the best features of the Kona Electric is the 64 kWh battery that gives the Kona up to 258 miles on a single charge. An impressive number for an entry-level electric vehicle.

The Kona Electric features an oversized 10.25” instrument display and a separate 8” touchscreen on the dashboard that controls the navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

The standard Kona Electric comes with heated cloth seats and you can upgrade to the Convenience Package to add features such as a sunroof, LED interior lighting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a wireless charger.

The Hyundai Kona EV is rated as a best choice by EVROOM for any buyer who is looking for an affordable electric car with adequate range, great styling, and the latest safety features.

3. 2023 Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid ($35,400)

Best For: The Long-Range Electric Car Buyer

Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid

If you are looking to tip-toe into the electric car market without the fear of being left on the side of the road with a dead battery, then you may want to consider the Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV).

A PHEV is the best of two worlds, a plug-in battery that drives an electric motor up to 33 miles without using a drop of gasoline combined with a high-efficiency gas-powered engine to take over thereafter.

Since most commutes in the US are roughly 20 miles each way, with the Hyundai Tucson PHEV, it is possible that you may only fill your 11-gallon gas tank once a month.

With rapidly changing weather patterns, all-wheel-drive is a must for anybody who lives in climates with four seasons. The Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV comes standard with all-wheel-drive and with the PHEV you won’t worry about running out of battery when you’re stuck in ski traffic on the way to the slopes.

Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid dashboard

The interior of the Hyundai Tucson Limited PHEV looks more like a luxury BMW than a reasonably priced SUV. A sleek dash with nothing sticking up gives the driver a clear view of the road ahead.

Like the other Hyundais, the Tucson comes equipped with a large infotainment screen that supports both Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto.

Hyundai Tucson Plug-In

The smaller of the midsize SUVs in Hyundai’s electric car offerings, the Tucson PHEV is a great option if you prefer sitting a little higher than in a car yet don’t want to be in a vehicle so large that you feel like a bull in a China shop when you’re trying to find a parking space at the mall.

4. 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid ($40,000)

Best For: The ALL-Weather Electric Car Buyer

Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid

The next size up for a Hyundai electrified vehicle is the Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV. With all-wheel-drive, a tall stance, and aggressive styling, the Santa Fe PHEV is an outstanding alternative to the gas-guzzling Toyota 4Runner.

With 76 MPGe, 420 miles of range, and 2,000 lb tow capacity, all you need to do is to add rock rails, a roof rack, and some solar panels and you’ll have a super high-efficiency overlander. (Future Goals.)

Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid interior

Not only is the Santa Fe a little larger and taller than the Tucson, the Limited package takes luxury to the next level. Quilted, heated, and ventilated leather seats, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic roof complete the spacious interior.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is an outstanding choice for the buyer looking for an all-weather electrified SUV that can go from muddy roads to Rodeo Dr. without missing a step.

Final Thoughts

While Hyundai may never become as revered as BMW in the gas-powered automotive world, with their large selection of electric and electrified cars they are well on their way to getting ahead of the competition and becoming the manufacturer to beat in the EV space.

We here at EVROOM want to encourage Hyundai to keep up the great work and we look forward to seeing more of their electric options in the future!

When I originally commented I seem to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on every time a comment is added I recieve four emails with the exact same comment. Perhaps there is an easy method you are able to remove me from that service? Many thanks!
